V. QUOTABLE QUOTES

True freedom is not the absence of structure, letting employees go off and do whatever they want, but rather a clear structure that enables people to work within established boundaries in an autonomous and creative way. -Erich Fromm

The brilliant moves we occasionally make would not have been possible without the dumb ones. -Stanley Goldstein

The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook. -William James

The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing, a vice heretofore little known in an American army, is growing into fashion. He hopes the officers will, by example as well as influence, endeavor to check it, and that both they and the men will reflect that we can have little hope of the blessing of Heaven on our arms, if we insult it by our impiety and folly. Added to this, it is a vice so mean and low, without any temptation, that every man of sense and character detests and despises it. -Gen. George Washington, General order issued in New York, July, 1776

There are two books which should be kept in every home and should be read by every member of the family: the Bible, which tells of the miracles of God, and the seed catalog, which proves them. -Frank Cetin

The great danger in education today is the fact that we have failed to see the difference between knowledge and wisdom. We train the head and let the heart run wild. We allow culture and character to walk miles apart, stuffing the head with mathematics and languages -leaving manners and morals out of the picture. -Theodore H. Palmquist

KATE WARNICK AWARD

Elizabeth Siepmann Fink, author of The History of a Country Church, is recipient of the Kate Warnick award given by The Texas United Methodist Historical Society. The Award is given in three categories, depending on the size of membership; the small church award goes to the best history from a church of less than 500 members. Elizabeth wrote the history for the 120th Celebration and submitted the book in November for award consideration.

The purpose of the award is to honor the best Local United Methodist church histories published in the sponsoring annual conferences and to encourage research, writing and publication of histories of local churches. The result of this award was not known until the Southwest Texas Conference in Corpus Christi.

Kate Wamick was the SMU Perkins School of theology Seminary Librarian for 60 years and curator of the Methodist Collection at the Bridwell Library. This award was established in 1978 to honor Mrs. Kate Warnick.

In addition to the plaque, Monthalia United Methodist Church name will be added to the cumulative award plaques housed in Bridwell Library, Perkins School of Theology, at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

In 1986, A Century of Methodism , 1886-1986, written by Leonard A. Gandre and Estelle Froehner also received the Warnick Award.

SOUTHWEST TEXAS ANNUAL

CONFERENCE

Gilbert Philippus, Lay Delegate attended the conference in Corpus Christi with the first business meeting starting at 10:30 Thursday, June 7th. The first of many ballots were taken, voting on both clergy and laity delegates for the General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Other reports were given but election of delegates was top priority, this was the first year for electronic balloting.

2008 Apportionments were presented. World Service and Conference Benevolence had a healthy increase and was amended to be increased even more to add advertising ($150,000.00) to the overall Apportionments.

A good report was the increase of 104 new members to the Southwest Texas Conference during the past year. There were 5 Ordinands into the ministry and 12 new students studying toward Ordination. Studies shows that Churches with the conference spend only 4% on themselves.

Only two Pastors were moved in the Victoria District.

Members total 1,457 in Gonzales County Methodist churches.
